The 95th Battle of the Maroons: A Legendary Three Day Cricket Spectacle
The 95th Battle of the Maroons, the legendary annual cricket showdown between Ananda College and Nalanda College, unfolded over three thrilling days from February 28 to March 2, 2025, at the SSC Grounds Colombo. This year was special, marking a century to Nalanda College and the first ever three day encounter in the history of “Battle of the Maroons”.
Day 1: Ananda’s Strong Start
Nalanda College won the toss, allowing Ananda College to bat first. Their decision paid off as Ananda ended the first day with a solid 154/3. The scene was set for an exciting encounter, and both teams were in eager to showcase their skills in what promised to be a historic battle between Ananda & Nalanda.
Day 2: Nalanda’s Reply
Ananda College declared their innings at 324/6, with Dinada Athalage playing a brilliant knock of 131 runs off 288 balls. Kenul De Zoysa supported well with 73 runs, while Nethula Edirimanne chipped in with 49 runs. The highlight was Athalage’s patient and composed century, which gave Ananda a solid foundation. For Nalanda, Punsara Rajakaruna and Osanda Pamuditha each took two wickets, helping to restrict Ananda’s scoring.
In reply, Nalanda College began their innings with determination, finishing the 2nd day at 58/0. The opening partnership between Sadew Samarasinghe and Nadul Jayalath remained unbroken, setting up a thrilling third day.
Day 3: Nalanda’s Narrow Lead
Nalanda College continued their strong performance, declaring their innings at 325/6 a one run lead over Ananda’s total. Nadul Jayalath was the star for Nalanda, scoring a solid 111 runs off 192 balls. His innings was crucial in giving his team a slight advantage.
Ananda’s bowlers, led by Sharada Jayarathna, who claimed four wickets for 58 runs, fought hard to keep the game in balance. However, the match took an unfortunate turn when rain interrupted play, halting any further progress.
Ananda College was able to score 27 runs for one wicket in their second innings, but the weather didn’t allow the game to reach a conclusion. With the match ending in a draw, both Ananda and Nalanda retained the Dr. N.M. Perera Memorial Trophy.
