96th Battle Of The Maroons : A Legendary Three Day Encounter
The 96th Battle of the Maroons concluded at the SSC grounds in a high-scoring draw, defined by exceptional batting from both Ananda and Nalanda. Across three days of traditional schoolboy cricket, the encounter saw three magnificent centuries, making it a memorable match for the record books.
1. Day 1 – Ananda Sets the Pace
Ananda College won the toss and made the most of favorable batting conditions. Opening batsman Nethula Edirimanne played a remarkably composed innings, anchoring the side with a record-breaking 165. He showed great patience and shot selection throughout his time at the crease. Supported by a quick 53 from Ovin Perera, Ananda confidently declared their first innings at 353 for 8.
2.Day 2 & 3 – Nalanda Takes Control
Facing a large total, Nalanda experienced early pressure before skipper Osanda Pamuditha settled the innings with a vital 55. From there, Nemindu Akmeemana and Mihin Zoysa took complete control of the game. Batting with superb focus and timing, the duo smoothly guided Nalanda past the Ananda total. Akmeemana crafted a patient and flawless 142, grinding down the bowling attack, while Zoysa played beautifully at the other end to secure his own brilliant 119. Their centuries allowed Nalanda to declare at an imposing 424 for 8, successfully securing first-innings honors. Pamuditha also impressed with the ball, finishing the match with an excellent six-wicket haul.
3. Final Result – Securing the Draw
Trailing by 71 runs, Ananda needed a solid start to their second innings to save the game. Opener Danindu Sellapperuma delivered exactly that. Taking an aggressive approach, he struck a superb 96 off just 132 balls. His rapid scoring effectively wiped out the deficit and safely steered Ananda away from any danger of a collapse.Ananda eventually declared at 170 for 6. With the result safely secured for both sides, the captains agreed to a well-earned draw, allowing Nalanda to retain the Dr. N.M. Perera Memorial Trophy.

Following the conclusion of the three-day encounter, the standout performers were recognized for their brilliant individual contributions:
